Spain Extends RSV Vaccination to Care-Home Residents and Immunocompromised Adults

Implementation begins each autumn as a single dose, with rollout completing by 2028.

Overview

  • Spain’s Interterritorial Council approved the 2026 vaccination calendar adding RSV shots for residents aged 60 and over in care homes and for at-risk adults with immunosuppression.
  • Eligible conditions include active or recent hematologic cancer, primary immunodeficiencies, advanced HIV, recent bone-marrow or solid-organ transplant, dialysis, and active treatment with chemotherapy or immunosuppressants.
  • Vaccination is recommended from the last week of September each season as a single dose that may be coadministered with influenza, COVID-19, or pneumococcal vaccines.
  • Autonomous communities will introduce the program gradually starting in 2026, with a deadline to achieve full implementation by autumn 2028.
  • Authorities will conduct seasonal epidemiological and genetic surveillance of RSV to monitor effectiveness and detect variants, building on evidence of 75%–80% vaccine effectiveness and strong infant-program results.
