Spain Confirms Tokyo Worlds Squad: Extremadura’s Luengo and Barroso Selected, García Zurita Omitted

RFEA finalizes its delegation after the Extremadura pair secured qualifying marks with recent personal bests.

Overview

  • Head coach José Peiró named the Spanish team on August 27 for the World Athletics Championships in Tokyo from September 13–21.
  • Marathoner Laura Luengo earned selection off a 2:22:31 at the Valencia Marathon in December 2024, comfortably inside the 2:23:30 standard and more than three minutes faster than her prior best.
  • Luengo will contest the women’s marathon alongside Fátima Azahaara Ouhaddou.
  • David Barroso qualified for the 800 metres by winning Freiburg on August 14 in 1:43.95, a personal best that ranks seventh on Spain’s all-time list.
  • Despite contributing to Spain’s mixed 4x400 qualification, David García Zurita will not travel, and Spain will not field the long relay individual in Tokyo.
