Overview
- Spain’s food safety agency said on 15 August that Brie Meule (1 kg) and Camembert Viejo Porche tested positive for Listeria monocytogenes, triggering withdrawals in Spain.
- European investigators link the outbreak to pasteurised soft cow’s- and goat’s-milk cheeses from a French producer, with products distributed to roughly 30 countries including the UK.
- At least 25 infections and two deaths have been reported, including 21 cases in France since December 2024 and four cases across Belgium, Denmark, the Netherlands and Norway.
- The manufacturer Chavegrand has recalled all batches produced before 23 June 2025, sold under various brands and identifiable by health mark FR 23.117.001.
- Health agencies advise vulnerable groups to watch for symptoms and urge anyone holding the recalled cheeses not to consume them and to return them to the point of purchase.
