Spain Confirms GPS Disruption on Minister’s Flight Near Kaliningrad

Officials describe a routine GPS disruption in a region known for frequent interference.

Overview

  • Spain’s defence ministry said a military A330 carrying Defence Minister Margarita Robles encountered a GPS disturbance near Russia’s Kaliningrad en route to Šiauliai, Lithuania.
  • A ministry spokesperson said there was an attempt to disrupt the GPS signal but the aircraft’s encrypted navigation kept the flight unaffected.
  • The aircraft was also transporting relatives of Spanish airmen deploying to NATO’s newly launched eastern‑flank air‑defence mission.
  • Spain reported that its Vilkas detachment intercepted eight Russian aircraft over the Baltic Sea last week.
  • A commander on board said such interference is common near Kaliningrad, and similar jamming was reported on Aug. 31 on Ursula von der Leyen’s flight to Bulgaria, which authorities there linked to suspected Russian interference as Moscow issued denials.
