Spain Confirms Five Citizens Freed in Venezuela Are Returning to Madrid

The government calls the move a positive step within a broader release of prisoners in Venezuela.

Overview

  • The Foreign Ministry said five Spaniards, including one dual national, were released in Caracas and are being assisted by the Spanish Embassy for their travel home.
  • According to Foreign Minister José Manuel Albares, the group is expected to land at Madrid-Barajas around 13:15 local time today if plans hold.
  • Albares said he spoke personally with all five and reported they are in good physical condition.
  • The freed citizens are Andrés Martínez Adasme, José María Basoa Valdovinos, Miguel Moreno Dapena, Ernesto Gorbe Cardona, and the human-rights defender Rocío San Miguel.
  • Madrid says the liberations form part of a larger process involving Venezuelan and foreign detainees, and Albares indicated at least one more Spanish release could follow within hours after an announcement by National Assembly leader Jorge Rodríguez.
