Spain Confirms 13 African Swine Fever Cases in Collserola as EU Extends Clampdown to 91 Municipalities

Catalonia has expanded field operations to keep the virus out of farms under an EU control zone covering 91 municipalities.

Overview

  • The Agriculture Ministry reported 13 infected wild boar confined to the 6‑kilometre core in Cerdanyola del Vallès, with five identified foci and 37 other carcasses testing negative.
  • Catalonia doubled the on‑the‑ground response to roughly 1,000 personnel with access controls, disinfection and systematic searches across the 6 km core and 20 km surveillance belt, and officials say most of about 50 carcasses found are negative.
  • Brussels’ provisional measures run through February 28, 2026 and restrict pork exports from the 91 listed municipalities as veterinarians keep testing at 39 nearby farms, where no clinical signs have been detected.
  • Industry leaders at Mercolleida urge immediate culling of roughly 30,000 fattening pigs in the 39 farms and removal of wild boar within 20 km, as the reference price drops to €1.10/kg to help move product.
  • Export and regional responses intensify, with Mexico suspending Spanish pork, Japan blocking Catalonia, China allowing trade that excludes Barcelona province, the UK accepting EU demarcation, South Korea signaling acceptance, and Aragón, Galicia and Castilla y León boosting wild boar controls and pressing for coordinated national action.
