Spain Awards 12 Urban Renaturalization Projects Worth €39.3 Million

The new awards apply a regionalized EU cofinancing model to drive nature‑based adaptation that strengthens urban resilience to floods and heat.

Overview

  • At an event in Madrid led by Vice President and ecological transition minister Sara Aagesen, the government presented 12 selected projects managed by Fundación Biodiversidad and cofinanced with FEDER.
  • The call introduced regionalized cofinancing, with up to 85% EU support in less developed regions and around 40% in more developed areas such as Catalonia and Madrid.
  • Sant Adrià de Besòs will advance the ReViuBesòs plan with €2.7 million in funding, 40% from FEDER and the remainder from AMB and the municipality, adding a parallel channel, restored lagoons, new wetlands and a saline pond to bolster biodiversity.
  • Vigo secured €2.1 million in FEDER funds for its €3.5 million Alcabre Verde project to renaturalize the coastline, extend an ecological corridor along Avenida de Europa and humanize a section of the VG‑20 with vegetated covers and improved pedestrian links.
  • The selections lift the recovery plan’s portfolio to about 85 supported urban projects after a call that drew 87 proposals seeking €276.1 million, with next steps focused on local cofinancing, detailed design and site preparation.
