Overview

  • The Council of Ministers signed off on the implementing regulation for the asbestos compensation fund on June 17, 2025.
  • Compensation amounts are set by pathology severity, ranging from €32,207 for asbestosis to €96,621 for mesothelioma in one-time payments.
  • Applicants must secure a regional health department certificate diagnosing an asbestos-related disease before filing a claim with the INSS.
  • The INSS has a six-month deadline to resolve each application and a lack of response will be treated as a denial.
  • The fund, created by an October 2022 law after years of unions’ and victims’ associations’ advocacy, will be financed through state budgets and additional contributions.
