Spain Approves Decree to Expand Medical School Intake in Andalusia for 2025–26

The measure directs €5.55 million in subsidies to seven public universities to ease the shortfall of graduates for specialist training.

Overview

  • The Council of Ministers approved a Royal Decree authorizing direct funding to add 171 new first-year Medicine seats across seven of Andalusia’s eight public universities, with Huelva not included.
  • Andalusia will have 370 subsidized places in total this academic year, covering 171 in first year, 140 previously expanded second-year seats, and 59 new third-year seats.
  • The first-year increase is distributed as follows: Seville 48, Granada 38, Málaga 26, Cádiz 21, Córdoba 20, Almería 9, and Jaén 9.
  • The University of Córdoba will receive €600,000 to support 40 subsidized places, comprising 20 new first-year seats, 13 maintained in second year, and 7 added in third year.
  • Nationally, the package funds 1,783 subsidized places—922 in first year, 642 maintained in second year, and 219 in third year—with a government contribution of €26.7 million, targeting shortages most acute in Family and Community Medicine.
