Overview
- The Sectorial Conference voted on Thursday to allocate the €35 million approved by the Council of Ministers, with all attending regions backing the distribution and the Region of Murcia abstaining.
- Canarias, Baleares, Ceuta and Melilla receive the largest shares (Canarias €4m, Baleares €2m, Ceuta €5.5m, Melilla €4m) and the remaining €29.5m is split proportionally among other communities.
- Galicia was assigned €740,000, which regional officials say is an 82% cut from 2025 and covers less than 5% of the region’s estimated costs for caring for these minors.
- The ministry said Vox regional ministers from Extremadura, Aragón and Castilla y León did not attend the meeting and criticized their absence as showing lack of interest in child rights while the ministry defended the conference’s legitimacy.
- The transfers may be used for information, psychosocial support, schooling, social and labor insertion, foster or residential care and expanding places, but regions warn frozen central budgets and multi-year care needs mean the lump sum may not cover long-term costs and could deepen local strain.
