Spain Appoints Airbus to Lead New Combat Pilot Training System

The plan pairs Turkish-built Hürjet trainers with Spanish conversion and training infrastructure to ensure national control.

Overview

  • The Ministry of Defence named Airbus Defence and Space national coordinator for the ITS-C to be delivered in partnership with Turkish Aerospace, manufacturer of the Hürjet.
  • Spain will procure 30 Hürjet advanced jet trainers to replace the F-5 fleet, with Airbus responsible for adapting the aircraft to Spanish-specific systems; Turkish officials say the package is valued at about €2.6 billion ($3 billion).
  • Initial aircraft are slated to arrive in 2028–2029 for Spanish certification, with national-content conversion and final deliveries scheduled from the second half of 2031 through 2035.
  • An Aircraft Conversion Centre will be established in Spain after the first two jets are modified at Airbus’s Getafe site, involving Spanish defence and technology firms on mission and training systems, avionics and simulators.
  • A Ground Based Training System is planned for 2028 at Talavera la Real alongside refurbishment of the Fighter and Attack School and an integrated operations and maintenance services package.
