Spain and Peru Launch Early Autumn Vaccination Drives Targeting Flu, COVID-19 and RSV

Health authorities are advancing schedules to raise uptake in vulnerable groups following last season’s low coverage.

Overview

  • Catalonia began its first-phase flu and COVID-19 campaign on 22 September for care‑home residents, people 80+, pregnant women, health and social workers, and children 6–59 months for flu, with the rest of recommended groups called from 13 October.
  • Madrid started vaccinating older adults against RSV, purchasing 100,000 doses and administering about 12,000 shots to residents and high‑risk people, with expansion to older adults living at home planned from January 2026.
  • Andalusia will open flu vaccination on 30 September for children 6–59 months, pregnant women and teachers, extend to residencies and health workers on 6 October, and phase in older and risk groups through late October, while continuing infant RSV immunization.
  • Galicia launched its infant RSV programme with hospital administration for newborns and active calls for babies under six months, and will pilot intranasal flu vaccination in 55 schools from 13 October for up to 19,000 children aged roughly 3–11.
  • Peru’s Ministry of Health is running a National Vaccination Week from 22 to 28 September with health‑center services, additional posts and door‑to‑door brigades, followed by three more rounds scheduled in October, November and December.
