Spain Allocates €9.1 Million to Restore Four Galician Monuments

Funded through the Programme 2% Cultural, the grants signal continued central support with a €45 million national call due before the end of 2026.

Overview

  • The central government approved a provisional allocation of €9.1 million for four monuments in Galicia under the 2025 Programme 2% Cultural, a list cleared by the inter‑ministerial commission.
  • Santiago de Compostela will receive about €5 million in total, including €3.7 million for roof work at the Monastery of San Martín Pinario and €1.3 million for the cathedral’s roof and the Obradoiro façade.
  • In Lugo province the plan awards €2.8 million to the Monastery of San Salvador de Lourenzá to create a cultural space and €1.2 million to the Mondoñedo cathedral complex for restoration and revitalization.
  • The four Galician projects are part of a national package that selected 78 interventions across 73 municipalities with €80 million in funding from 422 applications, giving Galicia roughly 11.5% of the total.
  • The Programme 2% Cultural sets aside 2% of certain public‑works budgets for heritage; since its launch it has approved 1,346 requests with execution budgets of about €1.36 billion and state subsidies covering roughly 63% of costs, which supports conservation and reuse projects that can boost local cultural activity and tourism.
