Spain Adds 142,000 Social Security Affiliates in October as Jobless Total Edges Up

Seasonal hiring in education powered the increase, with women driving most of the gains.

Overview

  • Affiliation rose by 141,926 to 21,839,592 contributors, the second-strongest October on record after the pandemic rebound year.
  • Registered unemployment increased by 22,101 to 2,443,766, marking the lowest October jobless total since 2007.
  • Education added roughly 167,000 affiliates while hospitality lost more than 50,000 as summer contracts ended; construction improved modestly.
  • Women reached a record of about 10.34 million affiliates and accounted for roughly 110,000 of October’s net gains; foreign contributors exceeded 3.1 million.
  • Regional outcomes diverged: Catalunya set a record with about 3.88 million affiliates, Madrid added 49,445 affiliates, and Castilla y León led the monthly rise in registered unemployment with 2,545 more jobseekers to 100,568; separately, an IIEP/EDIL report shows Argentina has lost about 205,000 formal salaried jobs since December 2023 through July 2025.
