SpaceX Falcon 9 Upper Stage Struck the Moon

  • NASA confirmed that a discarded second stage from a Falcon 9 impacted the Moon on Wednesday after it spent more than a year in an uncontrolled EarthMoon trajectory.
  • Ground telescopes in Chile reported a brief impact cloud with sodium and lithium spectral lines and agencies say the event posed no danger to Earth.
  • The booster is estimated at about four metric tons and struck at roughly 2.43 km/s, a blow scientists expect to have produced a crater measured in tens of meters across.
  • The Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter, South Korea’s Danuri/ShadowCam and other orbiters will image the site before and after impact to map the crater and ejecta and refine impact models.
