Space Shuttle Endeavour Installed in Launch-Ready Position at California Science Center
The retired orbiter is now part of a unique vertical display, marking the first time in over a decade a Space Shuttle has been presented in this way.
- NASA's retired Space Shuttle Endeavour has been hoisted and installed in a vertical launch position at the future Samuel Oschin Air and Space Center at the California Science Center in Los Angeles.
- The Endeavour orbiter was lifted atop an external tank and two solid rocket boosters, marking the first time in over a decade that a Space Shuttle has been displayed in a launch-ready position.
- The intricate stacking process, which was commonly done to prepare for launches when the space shuttle program was active, has never been done outside of a NASA facility before.
- The display is part of the museum's 'Go for Stack' process, which began in July 2023, with the aim of building the only 'ready for launch' 20-story-tall vertical display of the Space Shuttle.
- Construction of the Samuel Oschin Air and Space Center is expected to continue for another 18 months, with around 100 more spacecraft to be added to the display.
