Space Force Nears Deployment of Two Satellite Jammers, With Remote Units Already in Limited Use

The Pentagon casts the ground-based, remote systems as defensive tools to disrupt Chinese or Russian ISR satellites.

Overview

  • L3Harris’s Meadowlands has moved into final training, live-fire events and mission rehearsals, with Space Operations Command expecting fielding this fiscal year.
  • Remote Modular Terminals from Northstrat and CACI are in limited early use at undisclosed overseas sites and can be operated remotely while testing continues.
  • Bloomberg-reported acquisition plans envision up to 32 Meadowlands systems and 24 Remote Modular Terminals to broaden the force’s options.
  • Space Force is building a Space Electromagnetic Tactical Operations Centre that uses the Bounty Hunter surveillance system, previously delivered to INDOPACOM and CENTCOM, to coordinate electromagnetic operations.
  • The new jammers will complement the Counter Communications System declared operational in 2020, as officials cite China’s roughly 1,200 satellites with more than 510 used by the PLA for ISR.
