Space Force Activates Northern Component for Homeland Defense

The new unit reflects a shift toward regionally tailored space support for NORTHCOM under the Pentagon’s Western Hemisphere priority.

Overview

  • U.S. Space Forces Northern was officially activated on Jan. 30 at Peterson Space Force Base as the Space Force component under U.S. Northern Command.
  • The component is tasked to deliver enhanced domain awareness, missile warning and tracking, positioning, navigation and timing, satellite communications, and emerging orbital and electromagnetic warfare capabilities.
  • Brig. Gen. Robert Schreiner took command at the ceremony, which featured the unfurling of the unit’s guidon.
  • SPACEFOR-NORTH becomes the Space Force’s seventh service component since 2020, complementing existing elements in the Indo-Pacific, Central, Europe-Africa, Space, Korea and Japan.
  • Operating across NORTHCOM’s area of responsibility, the unit will support defense of the United States, Canada, Mexico, portions of the Caribbean and Greenland, and will coordinate future capability requirements with U.S. Space Command.
