Southwest Monsoon Begins Withdrawal from Northwest India

Heavy rainfall continues in several regions as monsoon starts retreating from Rajasthan, Punjab, and Haryana.

  • The India Meteorological Department (IMD) confirmed the monsoon's withdrawal from parts of Rajasthan, Gujarat, Punjab, and Haryana starting Monday.
  • Despite the retreat, heavy to extremely heavy rainfall is expected in Maharashtra, Karnataka, Goa, and several other regions over the next few days.
  • This year's monsoon has delivered 5.5% above-average rainfall, aiding water reservoirs but potentially damaging crops ready for harvest.
  • A low-pressure system forming over the Bay of Bengal is forecasted to bring more rain to southern peninsular regions.
  • The delayed monsoon withdrawal could impact the sowing of rabi crops and pose risks to inflation due to potential crop damage.
