Southern Energy Approves $15 Billion for Second Floating LNG Export Vessel

This final investment decision under Argentina’s RIGI framework secures the MKII’s delivery by late 2028.

Overview

  • The MKII vessel, currently being converted in China, will add 3.5 million tonnes of annual LNG capacity when it arrives in Río Negro in 2028.
  • It will join the Hilli Episeyo, due in early 2027 with 2.45 MTPA output, to lift Argentina’s export capability to about 6 MTPA of LNG (27 million m³ daily).
  • Exports from the two units between 2027 and 2035 are projected to generate over $20 billion in foreign-exchange revenues.
  • Southern Energy’s consortium—PAE, YPF, Pampa Energía, Harbour Energy and Golar LNG—will operate both vessels under a 30-year free-export license.
  • Construction is expected to create some 1,900 local jobs and drive additional Vaca Muerta development and pipeline connections to Río Negro.
