Southern California Religious Group Leaders Arrested as Police Treat 2023 Disappearance as Possible Homicide

Authorities say the only known connection between two missing men is their involvement with His Way Spirit Led Assemblies.

The two leaders of a religious group linked to a person who went missing from a Starbucks in Redlands in 2023 were arrested at the Laguna Hills Lodge in Laguna Hills, Calif., police said.

Overview

  • Redlands police served a new warrant this week at a Colton address and recovered additional weapons, marking at least the fourth search in the case.
  • Investigators found Emilio Ghanem’s rented Nissan Frontier and other evidence, leading them to pursue his 2023 disappearance as a potential homicide.
  • On August 14, Pastor Darryl “Muzic” Martin and his wife, Shelly Bailey “Kat” Martin, were detained at a Laguna Hills hotel on suspicion of illegal weapons possession, with Shelly later released after a medical episode.
  • Searches at properties in Hemet and Anza uncovered converted fully automatic rifles, short-barreled rifles, unserialized ghost guns, and electronic devices for analysis.
  • The pastor and three others arrested during the operations are out of custody and have not been charged as authorities coordinate with Claremont police on the separate case of missing Perris resident Ruben Moreno.
