Southern Brazil Under 'Great Danger' Alert as Deepening Extratropical Cyclone Arrives

Hot, humid air feeding the deep low is priming the atmosphere for widespread severe thunderstorms.

Overview

  • The national meteorology service (INMET) issued a top‑severity warning from midday Monday through late Tuesday for much of Rio Grande do Sul, Santa Catarina and Paraná, forecasting rainfall above 100 mm per day, winds over 100 km/h and hail.
  • Forecasters expect the most hazardous conditions Tuesday into Wednesday with gusts near 90–120 km/h in exposed areas of Rio Grande do Sul and Santa Catarina, then a gradual shift offshore beginning midweek.
  • Beyond the South, INMET posted an orange alert for 128 municipalities in northern, central and northwestern Minas Gerais with 30–60 mm per hour or 50–100 mm per day and 60–100 km/h winds, while São Paulo and Mato Grosso do Sul face strong storms and gusty conditions.
  • State agencies, including Defesa Civil and Simepar, warn of flooding, downed trees and power outages and direct the public to emergency numbers 199 (civil defense) and 193 (fire brigade).
  • Santa Catarina and Paraná face multi‑day instability with frequent lightning and localized hail, and coastal Santa Catarina can see rough seas with waves near 3 meters as winds intensify.
