Overview

• A July 2025 Statistisches Bundesamt report ranked 237 EU regions by overnight stays per resident in 2023.
• Southern Aegean islands topped the list with 117 overnight stays per inhabitant and the Ionian Islands followed at 98.
• South Tyrol recorded 68 stays per resident, Croatia’s Adriatic coast 67 and Spain’s Balearic Islands 57, where residents have protested rising living costs.
• Several regions in Poland and Romania saw virtually no tourism last year, averaging around one overnight stay per resident.
• The Canary Islands led Europe in absolute numbers with 95.6 million nights but placed tenth per capita, while Germany’s Mecklenburg-Vorpommern logged 18 stays per resident and Upper Bavaria had 41.6 million overnight stays.
