Southeastern Grocers to Become The Winn-Dixie Company, Refocus on Florida

The grocer will shed locations in several Southern states to concentrate investment and growth in Florida and southern Georgia through acquisitions and store upgrades.

Overview

  • Ownership of 32 Winn-Dixie and eight Harveys stores in Alabama, Georgia, Louisiana and Mississippi will transition or close, with most changes slated to finish by early 2026.
  • Alabama will lose all remaining Winn-Dixie locations, with the company confirming 18 closures or transitions; several sites are being sold to Food City and Piggly Wiggly, which say they plan to hire many workers.
  • After the restructuring, the company expects to operate about 130 conventional grocery stores and 140 freestanding or adjacent liquor stores concentrated in Florida and southern Georgia.
  • To expand in North Florida, the company is acquiring three Hitchcock’s Markets in Alachua, Keystone Heights and Williston, converting them to Winn-Dixie with openings beginning in December 2025 and continuing into summer 2026.
  • Anthony Hucker will remain chairman and CEO as the company pursues remodels, new stores and service pilots that include third‑party online ordering and in‑store return kiosks.
