South Yorkshire Police Admit Fatal Crash Misidentification, Refer Case to Watchdog

Formal checks confirmed a survivor was wrongly named, prompting an external review with specialist family support.

Overview

  • South Yorkshire Police confirmed after fresh forensic identification that Trevor Wynn is the hospitalised survivor and Joshua Johnson, 18, is deceased.
  • The correction followed information received on 4 January, three weeks after the 13 December collision on Todwick Road near Rotherham.
  • Two teenagers died in the crash, including a 17-year-old girl who was driving, after a silver Toyota Corolla left the carriageway between Dinnington and Todwick.
  • The force has self-referred to the Independent Office for Police Conduct and says it will cooperate fully, with ACC Colin McFarlane offering meetings and specialist support to the families.
  • The criminal inquiry continues, with an 18-year-old arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and a 19-year-old on suspicion of perverting the course of justice, both on bail.
