South Tyrol Plans Dog Fees: €1.50 a Day for Tourists, €100 a Year for Residents

A draft law would replace a dropped DNA registry with targeted charges to pay for street cleaning.

Overview

  • The Agriculture and Tourism department is drafting the proposal before municipal consultation and a vote in the provincial parliament.
  • Officials target 1 January 2026 for the resident tax and later in 2026 for the visitor fee, which would come on top of existing nightly tourist charges.
  • Revenue would fund the removal of dog waste from public spaces, shifting costs away from general municipal waste fees paid by non-owners.
  • The previously planned canine DNA database to match feces to dogs has been scrapped, and Tourism Councillor Luis Walcher signaled tougher enforcement and higher fines for non-cleanup.
  • Pushback has begun, with the hoteliers’ association calling the plan underdeveloped and the Süd-Tiroler Freiheit warning it adds costs for owners, including many older residents.
