South Station Fare Gates Reopen After Weeklong Snow Shutdown

Keolis says technicians are evaluating weather-related failures to harden the month-old system for winter conditions.

Overview

  • The MBTA and Keolis reactivated the gates on Feb. 4 for Thursday morning’s commute after more than a week offline.
  • Keolis and equipment vendor Scheidt & Bachmann are assessing snow and cold impacts and pursuing corrective actions.
  • Conductors will continue verifying tickets on trains while gate performance is monitored.
  • South Station has 40 gates that cost about $3.3 million and sit under new construction that leaves them exposed to wind and bitter cold.
  • The Jan. 25–26 storm dumped roughly two feet of snow with persistent subfreezing temperatures, prompting the shutdown despite some gates being preemptively covered.
