South Mumbai Faces 24-Hour Water Cuts After Major Pipeline Leak Near Mantralaya

BMC crews are working overnight to repair the 600 mm main opposite Mantralaya.

Overview

  • The leak on Madam Cama Road caused a roughly 40‑metre cave‑in and forced closure near Mantralaya’s Gate No. 1.
  • BMC ordered a phased 24‑hour shutdown for Cuffe Parade, G.D. Somani Road, Colaba Koliwada and Geeta Nagar with announced time windows.
  • BEST suspended the Backbay Depot section and diverted at least nine routes, including 121, 138, 5, 8, 15, 82, 87, 89 and 126.
  • A Ward control recorded the incident around 11:30 am, teams were deployed by early afternoon, and emergency restoration is in progress.
  • Officials cited an aging pipe and undetected leakage as likely factors, and the civic body indicated water service could return by Saturday night or Sunday morning while road repairs continue.
