South London Teen Charged Over Alleged Bid to Join Islamic State in Syria

He is due at Westminster Magistrates' Court after CPS approval of a terrorism preparation charge.

Overview

  • Chafik Aziz, 18, of Wallington, Sutton, was charged on 11 November under section 5(1)(a) of the Terrorism Act 2006 for preparation of terrorist acts.
  • Police allege that between 1 July and 5 November he attempted to travel to Syria to join Islamic State.
  • He was arrested at Gatwick Airport on 4 November on suspicion of membership of a proscribed organisation under PACE.
  • He was re-arrested on 5 November under section 41 of the Terrorism Act 2000, and a 6 November court warrant allowed detention through 11 November.
  • Following further enquiries, the CPS authorised the charge on 11 November, he was remanded in custody, and he is scheduled to appear at Westminster Magistrates' Court on 12 November as part of a Counter Terrorism Policing London investigation.
