Overview
- Officers responded around 9:30 p.m. on Dec. 3 to the 400 block of West 84th Street in Vermont Knolls, where a 17-year-old was found critically injured and later died at a hospital.
- The LAPD Bomb Squad located additional explosive materials and carried out a controlled detonation at about 6 a.m. on Dec. 4.
- Investigators recovered a box labeled “Cash Game 357,” a 357-shot aerial cake that is considered dangerous and illegal under California law.
- Authorities have not determined whether the device that exploded was standard, modified, or homemade, and the victim’s name has not been released.
- Police seized a large quantity of illegal pyrotechnics, transferred explosives to safe storage, and reported no ongoing public safety concerns.
