South Korea’s Late-Summer Heat Persists as Cheoseo Brings No Relief

The weather agency says overlapping high-pressure systems will keep temperatures elevated into next week.

Overview

  • Heat wave watches cover most regions with apparent temperatures reaching about 35°C and continued tropical nights.
  • Forecasters expect a 1–2°C uptick over the weekend as the Tibetan and North Pacific highs overlap, with daytime highs broadly between 31°C and 36°C.
  • Specific hotspots including Samcheok, Uljin, Pohang and Gyeongju are forecast near 36°C, with higher readings east of the Baekdu Daegan attributed to the foehn effect.
  • A tropical depression south of Jeju is set to deliver 5–40 mm of localized rain as it moves toward Kyushu, and central regions may see rain around Aug. 26 without ending the heat.
  • The KMA’s monthly outlook points to above-normal temperatures through September, with model guidance indicating lingering high-pressure influence over the peninsula.
