South Korea’s Assembly Passes MBC Governance Bill as PPP Boycotts, Launches New Filibuster

Overview

  • The amendment passed 169–1 with 171 lawmakers participating, carried by the Democratic Party’s majority after the People Power Party boycotted the vote.
  • The DP immediately introduced the Korea Educational Broadcasting System Act, triggering a new filibuster by the opposition to block a second broadcasting measure.
  • The three-bill package seeks to enlarge boards at KBS, MBC and EBS and increase the role of media and broadcasting associations in governance.
