South Korean Peacekeepers Spotlight Global Role as UNC Marks 75 Years

UN deployments in Lebanon, South Sudan showcase Korea’s shift from beneficiary to security contributor.

Overview

  • South Korea maintains two long-running UN contingents: Dongmyeong with UNIFIL in Lebanon and Hanbit with UNMISS in South Sudan.
  • Dongmyeong conducts round-the-clock patrols to deter illicit arms and runs outreach that includes solar streetlights, water facilities, medical care, and popular language and taekwondo classes.
  • UNMISS recently named Hanbit its Best Engineer Unit after work repairing over 2,800 kilometers of roads, building 17 kilometers of flood barriers, and supporting runway construction.
  • Hanbit’s vocational school and farm have trained more than 700 local residents in skills such as agriculture, plumbing, carpentry, and poultry farming.
  • Seoul highlighted these missions during the UN Command’s 75th anniversary, with officials framing them as repayment of wartime solidarity and proof of Korea’s expanding security role.
