Overview

  • Ji, 49, allegedly drove his family’s car into the sea near Jindo Port on Sunday, resulting in the deaths of his wife, also 49, and their two teenage sons.
  • Police say Ji administered sleeping pills to his wife and sons before intentionally driving the vehicle into the water.
  • Ji told investigators he acted out of financial despair after accumulating roughly 160 million won in debt and escaped alone with help from an acquaintance named Kim.
  • Both Ji and Kim were arrested on Monday, and Ji appeared at a warrant hearing at the Gwangju District Court on Wednesday.
  • Authorities have requested the National Forensic Service to conduct autopsies on the victims before the court rules on detention.
