South Korean Jets Accidentally Drop Bombs on Civilian Area During Military Drill
Fifteen people were injured, including two seriously, after fighter jets mistakenly released bombs due to incorrect coordinates during a joint exercise with U.S. forces.
- Two South Korean KF-16 fighter jets dropped eight 500-pound bombs outside a designated training range near Pocheon, north of Seoul, during a live-fire drill with U.S. forces.
- Fifteen people were injured, with two sustaining serious injuries, including a shrapnel wound and a fractured shoulder; five of the injured were soldiers.
- The accident was caused by a pilot entering incorrect bombing coordinates, leading to all eight bombs detonating in a civilian area, damaging homes, a church, and a greenhouse.
- Approximately 50 residents were evacuated from the area, and live-fire exercises have been suspended while the military investigates the incident.
- The broader joint military exercises between South Korea and the U.S., scheduled to begin March 10, will proceed as planned, focusing on readiness for threats such as those posed by North Korea.
