Overview

  • On June 5 a newly assigned soldier from a Daegu–based unit left a standard-issue K2 rifle behind in a rented car after completing basic training
  • Neither the soldier nor the escorting noncommissioned officer noticed the rifle was missing when they returned the vehicle to the rental agency
  • A different renter discovered the weapon on June 8 and alerted police, prompting the military to retrieve the rifle from the civilian vehicle
  • Rep. Choo Mi-ae condemned the failure to detect the missing firearm for three days as a serious lapse in military discipline and called for accountability
  • The Army opened a formal investigation on June 10 and has warned that losing military supplies under the Military Criminal Act can lead to up to five years in prison or fines
