South Korea Unveils Record 35.3 Trillion-Won R&D Budget Plan for 2026

The proposal now heads to the National Assembly for review.

Overview

  • The package represents a 19.3% increase from this year's 29.6 trillion-won R&D budget, according to the Science and ICT ministry.

  • AI initiatives receive 2.3 trillion won to build homegrown capabilities and deploy the technology across industry and public services including administration, health care and defense.
  • Cutting-edge industries are allotted 8.5 trillion won with priorities in quantum computing, synthetic biology, self-driving technologies and robotics, while renewable-energy R&D totals 2.6 trillion won.
  • Defense R&D rises to 3.9 trillion won for space and cyber deterrence, as basic science reaches 3.4 trillion won, with 1.3 trillion won to attract overseas experts and 4 trillion won to strengthen state research institutes.
