Overview

  • The $6 billion contract covers 180 K2 tanks, with 117 built by Hyundai Rotem Co. in South Korea and 63 assembled by Poland’s PGZ
  • The signing ceremony is set for late June in Poland after being postponed from late 2024 by domestic issues such as South Korea’s brief martial law declaration
  • The deal marks Seoul’s largest single arms export and includes technology transfers and long-term maintenance support
  • It follows a July 2022 framework under which South Korea agreed to supply Poland with 1,000 K2 tanks, K9 self-propelled howitzers and FA-50 light attack aircraft
  • The locally produced tanks will feature upgraded variants that bolster Warsaw’s armored forces following its defense spending surge in response to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine
