South Korea Secures Release of Koreans Detained in Georgia Hyundai Raid

A chartered flight will return about 300 nationals once U.S. administrative processing is complete.

Overview

  • About 300 South Koreans were among 475 workers detained Thursday at the Hyundai–LG battery construction site in Ellabell, Georgia, in what Homeland Security Investigations called its largest single-site operation.
  • U.S. officials say the raid followed a months-long criminal probe into alleged unlawful employment practices; many detainees were moved to the Folkston ICE Processing Center and no broad criminal charges have been announced.
  • ICE released video showing detainees in wrist, waist and ankle restraints being loaded onto buses, with helicopters and armored vehicles supporting the operation.
  • Seoul deployed consular teams, set up an emergency response effort, and said it will review visa and residency arrangements for Koreans assigned to U.S. investment projects.
  • Hyundai advised employees to postpone nonessential U.S. travel and, along with LG Energy Solution, began supplier and compliance reviews tied to the $7.6 billion Georgia complex.
