South Korea Restores Cheong Wa Dae as Presidential Office Name as Lee Leaves Yongsan

The administration will base day-to-day work in the Yeomin complex, reserving the Blue House for formal duties.

Overview

  • President Lee Jae Myung made his final commute to the Yongsan office on Friday before the formal return to the Blue House early next week.
  • The presidential phoenix flag will be lowered at Yongsan and raised at Cheong Wa Dae at midnight Sunday, with the official name changing to Cheong Wa Dae on Monday.
  • Lee's primary workspace will be in the Yeomin complex to facilitate close coordination with top aides including the chief of staff, policy chief and national security adviser.
  • The main Blue House building will be used chiefly for summits and credential ceremonies rather than daily operations.
  • The move ends the approximately three-year, seven-month Yongsan era begun in May 2022, following full-scale relocation work from Dec. 9 and press briefings shifting to Chunchugwan on Dec. 22.
