South Korea Restores 81 Government Services After Data Center Fire as Probe and Safeguards Intensify

Officials say 96 destroyed systems will be rebuilt at the Daegu backup center over roughly four weeks.

Overview

  • Authorities report 81 of about 647 disrupted administrative systems are back online, or roughly 12.5 percent.
  • The National Intelligence Service raised the cyber threat level to “caution” at 6 p.m. to deter opportunistic attacks and strengthen monitoring ahead of APEC.
  • Relocation and reconstruction of 96 burned systems to the NIRS Daegu cluster are slated to take about a month, following initial two weeks to secure infrastructure.
  • Restored platforms include Government24, Korea Post’s financial system, resident registration, Digital OnePass and parts of emergency and postal logistics services, while the Onnara intranet and some civil petition and cremation booking functions remain unavailable.
  • Police formed an investigation team and seized six lithium‑ion UPS batteries after officials said an exploded battery sparked the blaze, with records noting some units had exceeded a 10‑year service life and replacement had been recommended.
