South Korea Restores 55 Government Systems After NIRS Data Center Fire

Officials plan to relocate 96 damaged systems to the NIRS Daegu cloud, targeting full normalization in about two weeks.

Overview

  • As of 10 a.m. on Sept. 29, the Interior Ministry said 55 of 647 disrupted administrative systems had resumed normal operations.
  • Restored services include Government24/Gov.kr, Korea Post financial functions, the resident registration system, Digital OnePass, and partial recovery of 119 multimedia emergency reporting and national fire information systems.
  • Authorities are proceeding with phased recovery and will announce additional resumptions via notices on Naver and Daum and through press releases.
  • The fire began with a lithium‑ion UPS battery explosion at the Daejeon facility and was fully extinguished about 22 hours later, leaving 96 systems in the affected room destroyed.
  • Leaders issued public apologies and opened help lines (110 and 120), as constraints persist including resident ID card reissuance, the national cremation booking site, and select Korea Post services such as U.S.-bound EMS.
