South Korea Records Ninth Consecutive Monthly Increase in Births

Pandemic-driven marriage growth fuels fertility gains despite continuing natural population decline.

Overview

  • March 2025 saw 21,041 newborns, up 6.8% from a year earlier and marking the ninth straight month of rising births.
  • First-quarter deliveries reached 65,022, a 7.4% increase and the strongest Q1 performance since data collection began in 1981.
  • The total fertility rate climbed to 0.82 in early 2025, up from 0.77 in the same period last year.
  • Marriage registrations hit 58,704 in January–March—a year-on-year gain of 8.4% and the highest first-quarter tally since 2019—with March ceremonies up 11.5%.
  • Deaths in March numbered 31,141, resulting in a natural population decrease of 10,100 for the month.
