South Korea Records Hottest May Mornings Nationwide

Unprecedented daily low temperatures, driven by humid southerly winds, are confirmed across multiple regions, with the Korea Meteorological Administration forecasting continued unseasonal heat.

Overview

  • Seoul experienced its highest recorded May daily minimum temperature of 23 °C, surpassing the previous record of 21.8 °C set in 2018.
  • Incheon recorded a new May daily low temperature of 20.7 °C, also the highest since observations began in 1907.
  • Southeastern cities, including Pohang (23.8 °C), Uljin (23.4 °C), and Ulleung Island (23.3 °C), set new May daily low records.
  • Several cities in Greater Seoul and Gangwon Province, such as Dongducheon, Paju, and Wonju, also broke records for their highest May morning temperatures.
  • The Korea Meteorological Administration warns that the unusually warm weather is expected to persist in the coming days.
