South Korea Greenlights Decommissioning of Kori-1 Nuclear Reactor

  • The Nuclear Safety and Security Commission gave final approval on June 26, marking the country’s first commercial reactor decommissioning.
  • The 12-year schedule calls for removal of spent fuel by 2031, clearance of contaminated zones by 2035 and full site restoration by 2037.
  • The project carries a 1.07 trillion won price tag and encompasses management of approximately 171,708 tons of radioactive waste.
  • Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power Co. began chemical decontamination in May 2024 and has deployed three specialized teams with 108 staff members to oversee dismantling preparations.
  • Successful dismantling of Kori-1 will showcase South Korea’s 96 developed decommissioning technologies and open doors to a global market valued at an estimated 500 trillion won.
