Overview

  • The Ministry of Science and ICT imposed a fine of up to 30 million won for SK Telecom’s delayed breach reporting and required the carrier to waive early termination fees for affected subscribers.
  • Authorities mandated quarterly security inspections, direct CEO oversight of data governance and increased investment and personnel in cybersecurity under threat of further penalties.
  • SK Telecom pledged a 1 trillion won initiative split between 500 billion won in customer benefits—such as bill discounts, extra data and penalty-free cancellations—and a 700 billion won investment in security over five years.
  • The free USIM replacement program remains in effect for all subscribers to guard against identity theft, with over 9.39 million cards swapped as of late June.
  • Despite a 4.1 percent drop in second-quarter operating profit to 515.3 billion won, SK Telecom resumed new sign-ups on June 24 and trimmed its 2025 sales target to 17 trillion won to account for breach-related costs.
