South Korea Expands APEC Security in Gyeongju as Military Chief Conducts Readiness Check

Elevated alerts plus military backing underpin a coordinated plan to secure venues and motorcades.

Overview

  • The security build-up targets the APEC leaders’ meeting on Oct. 31–Nov. 1 and the APEC CEO Summit on Oct. 28–31, which will draw about 1,700 industry executives including Nvidia’s Jensen Huang.
  • Police will deploy up to 18,500 officers per day with anti-drone systems, armored vehicles and helicopters for security, traffic control and crowd management.
  • JCS Chairman Gen. Jin Yong-sung inspected units, flew a P-8 patrol over the east coast and confirmed plans to mobilize roughly 3,600 troops for joint security operations.
  • The government will raise the nationwide terrorism alert to Caution this week and lift North and South Gyeongsang to the higher Alert tier from Oct. 28 to Nov. 1.
  • Authorities continue multi-agency drills featuring special forces, drones and detection dogs, while the Coast Guard conducts underwater searches at Bomun Lake and reinforces patrols near Pohang; police expect 15 rallies totaling about 10,000 people and will restrict demonstrations inside the Bomun Tourist Complex starting Saturday.
