South Korea Enacts Emergency Alert, Mobilizes Forces for Tuesday’s Election

Authorities have launched a two-day emergency operation to station police, firefighters, subway inspectors at polling sites.

Overview

  • Seoul Metropolitan Police will issue the gapho alert on election day, enabling full mobilization of available officers.
  • 21,700 police personnel are being deployed nationwide to secure polling and counting stations, with mobile squads in Mapo-gu, Dongdaemun-gu, Yeongdeungpo-gu and Gangnam-gu.
  • Release of privately owned firearms is temporarily banned until June 4 to reduce risks of election-related violence.
  • National Fire Agency has placed 242 fire stations on special duty, deploying 464 fire trucks and nearly 2,200 firefighters for electrical inspections and emergency readiness.
  • Seoul Metro is conducting 24-hour checks of all 276 stations, trains and depots with enhanced CCTV monitoring to prevent copycat incidents.
