Overview

  • The military began dismantling about 20 fixed loudspeakers along the DMZ on August 4 with work expected to finish within the week.
  • President Lee Jae-myung suspended frontline broadcasts on June 11 after trash-balloon provocations prompted their resumption last year.
  • The defense ministry says the step will help reduce inter-Korean tensions while maintaining South Korea’s readiness posture.
  • North Korea has stopped its own loudspeaker campaign but has rebuffed Seoul’s recent overtures for dialogue.
  • Both Koreas remain technically at war under the armistice that ended the 1950–53 conflict.
