South Korea Braces for Second Wave of Torrential Monsoon Rains

The Korea Meteorological Administration forecasts up to 150 millimeters of rain in parts of the capital region, raising the threat of flash floods.

Overview

  • The Korea Meteorological Administration predicts downpours reaching 70 millimeters per hour during the latest monsoon surge.
  • From Wednesday through Thursday, total rainfall is expected to hit 30–100 millimeters in the greater Seoul area and parts of Gangwon, with 30–80 millimeters across Chungcheong, Jeolla and Gyeongsang provinces.
  • Southeastern districts of Gyeonggi, southern Gangwon and areas of Jeolla could record over 120 millimeters, and isolated spots in the capital region may exceed 150 millimeters.
  • Officials have warned that roads near streams could suddenly flood and that landslides remain possible in vulnerable terrain.
  • Daytime temperatures during the rain will climb to 28–34 °C, sustaining intense heat and humidity even as storms continue.
